Indiana Randonneurs’ Lafayette-Zionsville Express 200k route blends urban exploration, serene country roads, and a deep dive into the state’s rich railroad history.
The ride kicks off in West Lafayette at Brokerage Brewery, the oldest brewery in the city. Brokerage is an intentionally small brewery that fosters community over food, drinks, and shared experiences. Please park in the back lot of the brewery before we roll out. The route then weaves through the heart of Lafayette on city roads before transitioning to quiet, traditional farmland back-country roads.
The centerpiece of this brevet is the legendary Big Four Rail Trail. This iconic path gets its name from the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago & St. Louis Railway, which was known as the “Big Four”. The railway was an essential part of the state’s infrastructure, and the trail we’ll be riding was part of the original line that ran from Lafayette to Indianapolis. The trail was established in Boone County in 1985. This flat and fast section of the route, which you’ll get on in Colfax, will carry you to Lebanon, where a well-deserved stop awaits you at the famous Titus Bakery. This historic family-owned bakery has been serving up delicious treats since 1968, originally operating out of the back of a grocery store. Be sure to grab one of their incredible treats including donuts, danishes, fritters, cookies, pies, muffins before continuing your journey. Titus also offers sandwiches and drinks and they are always happy to refill your water bottles for you.
From there, you’ll continue through the charming town of Whitestown before reaching your turnaround point in the unique and historic town of Zionsville. Zionsville is known for its beautiful brick main street and unique boutiques, offering a perfect break. Your turnaround control is an open control, giving you the freedom to choose your own dining adventure at any restaurant, cafe, or tavern that appeals to you.
Once refueled, you’ll retrace your steps back to Lafayette. Be ready for the final rewarding challenge of the ride: the “big hill” at the end. The sense of accomplishment will be immense, and the reward is even better. The finish line awaits you at Bruno’s Pizza, a Lafayette institution since 1953. This family-owned restaurant, started by two brothers and a lifelong friend, is renowned for its delicious pizza and cozy atmosphere. We would love for you to join us for this event, where you can cap off your ride with a well-earned Bruno’s pizza and a refreshing Brokerage brew before heading home.
